Baffinland Iron Ore Mine (BIM)
Adco built two separate power houses on the Baffinland Iron Ore mine site, a 7.5-mega-watt, 2-generator plant at the Mine site and a 10.5-mega-watt, 3-generator plant at the Port site. The complete EPC contract was awarded in December 2018, with site construction starting in August 2019 after seven months of engineering and procurement. Construction began with placement of floor skids, generators, and other large equipment, around which the building was erected. Fuel, heating/cooling, air, power distribution, fire alarm/suppression, and base building electrical systems were then installed. Adco was also responsible for the complete testing and commissioning of both plants, with the Mine plant project completed by December 2019 and the Port plant project by April 2020.

Adco was contracted by Caterpillar Canada to provide the mechanical and electrical construction services to install a 65 MW power plant consisting of ten 6.5 MW natural gas gensets. The plant is now providing electricity to the Alberta power grid. Over one hundred trades people were employed during the project, without a lost time incident. The project was successfully completed in November of 2014.

Adco was contracted by NTPC (Northwest Territories Power Corporation) to EPC (engineer, procure & construct) a brand-new power plant. The design build 820 kW plant contains two 320 kW units and one 180 kW unit. Adco sub-contracted out the civil and building scope of work, but still oversaw the complete construction of both disciplines. Working closely with our client, we are looking forward to another successful project in the summer of 2022.

Adco was contracted by Qillaq Innovations to complete the electrical and mechanical scopes of work, pertaining to a new bulk storage facility in Cambridge Bay, Nunavut. The new fuel farm stored LSDL, Jet A-1 and gasoline. Adco prefabricated the two fuel dispensing buildings and the operator shelter at their Edmonton facility and then barged them to site during the summer. The real work began once we arrived on site. The facility has been up and fully running since August 2015.

Suncor
This project consisted of manufacturing three 12×14 booster pumps. The primary function of these skids is to move slurry from one pond to another. All three skids were manufactured in our Edmonton fabrication shop. Suncor also contracted Adco to start-up, test and commission these pumps on site, just north Fort McMurray. Since then, Suncor has purchased another six booster skids from Adco.

Colville Lake Power Plant
NTPC requested a modular power plant for the community of Colville Lake. Adco worked on the basic layout, engineering and fabrication… as well as providing services for site start-up and commissioning. The power plant consisted of three diesel generators, for a total of 350KWs of power, and all other usual equipment (radiators, heat exchangers, fuel coolers, fuel pumps, fuel tanks, MCCs, PLCs etc.). A unique aspect of this project was that NTPC was also going to use solar power and battery storage to supply the community. Adco worked closely with NTPC sub-contractors to make sure all three systems (diesel, solar and battery) worked seamlessly together.
